Encourage, Respond, and Expand: Language Modeling in Pre-K
About the Event
Please contact elcbtraining@elcbroward.org if you have questions or need assistance.
The preschool years are a critical time for development in children. They develop new language skills when they are given opportunities to use the language that they know and when adults model more complex language. These language skills are important to children’s academic and social success. This training is designed to give participants the tools and knowledge to encourage children to talk and provide them with a language-rich environment.
By the end of this training, participants will:
1. Recognize how to engage children in social and instructional conversations throughout the day (frequent conversations)
2. Recall how to ask children questions that require more than a one-word response (open-ended questions)
3. Recognize how to repeat what children say and build on their comments (repetition & extension)
4. Recall how to describe what you and the children do as it’s happening by mapping the student's and own actions with language (self-and parallel talk)
5. Recognize how to intentionally introduce unfamiliar vocabulary to children in a way that they can understand (advanced language)
