Early Identification of Developmental Delays & Trauma Impact

Recent statistics indicate that as many as 1 in 4 children, ages 0-5, are at moderate or high risk for developmental, behavioral, or social delay due to trauma, substance exposure, genetic discourse, and/or medical challenges.  Research has also shown that children’s earliest experiences play a critical role in brain development. The brain is strengthened by positive early experiences, especially stable relationships with caring and responsive adults, safe and supportive environments, and appropriate nutrition.  High quality early intervention services can change a child’s developmental trajectory and improve outcomes for children, families, and communities.  Therefore, early identification of children’s developmental delays or learning difficulties helps us understand and take the required steps to support their overall functioning when exposed to trauma. This early identification facilitates the use of intervention strategies to provide the required positive early experiences for children at risk of academic difficulties and social-emotional challenges.

By the end of this training, participants will:

1. Recognize the impact of trauma on young children’s development
2. Discover appropriate ways of identifying lags in delay to refer and/or screen for appropriate services

Attendance Policy: Participants missing more than 15 minutes of total training time will NOT receive a certificate of attendance. Please be prepared to arrive on time and stay until the end of the training. Participants who leave the training early will not receive credit for the training.
